This model of a noria is on the exit from Bigastro onto the CV-95 to Torrevieja.

It is obviously a water wheel of some sort but not as you might find in England because the noria is a machine for lifting water into a small aqueduct. Its purpose is to irrigate the land. Unlike the type of water wheels which you find in mills, the noria does not provide mechanical power for any other process.

There are three types of noria.

The most common type (on which this model is based) consists of a vertical wheel which is slung with a chain of buckets. The buckets hang down into a well which may be up to 8m deep. The most primitive norias of this type were driven by donkeys, mules, or oxen. The animal turned another wheel, which engaged with the noria and so causes it to turn and the buckets to circulate.

A second type of noria uses a similar system of clay or wooden buckets, but it is driven by the wind. The wind driven norias near to Cartagena, are virtually identical in appearance with the local grinding mills.

The third type of noria uses energy from the flow of a river. This type has a large, very narrow undershot wheel with a rim made up of a series of containers that lift water from a river to a very small aqueduct at the top of the wheel.

As I told you the other day I stop the visual diary to do some project work :) Sorry I let you wait for a couple of days. So here is the fist project. It is a water wheel like thingy on a lake they probably use to bring oxygen to the water in order to keep the fish happy.

I tried some different angles and played with lighting. I wanted to freeze the water drops, show the movement or combine both techniques. There will come up some shots of this the next days. For this one I triggered slave mode strobe on the right hand side. I used the timer to shoot the camera and held the strobe in my hand. It surely looked funny when I jumped around with the flash in my hand xD xD xD My shoes and jeans were soaking wet when I finished.
